Filofax Ochre Malden A5 Review

Filofax Ochre Malden A5 Review

Around the holiday time of 2015, I discovered the Filofax Ochre Malden through the planner community on Instagram. I knew about the popular Kikki K planners as well but I liked the flexibility of the Filofax. I was able to see this through YouTube reviews and really wanted one for myself. Since it is pricey, I decided to wait on it. I eventually decided to purchase it the summer of 2016 and have been in love with it since.

I purchased mine from pensandleather.com along with a zip lock envelope. I believe the little Jot Pad (pictured below the clear zip lock envelope) came free with the purchase at the time.

Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed with a small scratch the Filofax had near the button closure. I blame the packaging it arrived in because it was the plastic cover (pictured below) that might have scratched the leather while it was traveling in the mail. Luckily, the scratch is not as noticeable as it was when it first arrived.

The Filofax Ochre Malden A5 has a total of eight pockets including a pocket in the very back. Only one pocket has a zipper.

This Filofax included vertical weekly pages, to do pages, colored lined pages (pink, yellow, blue, and purple), address pages, a notepad in the back pocket, a ruler, and a PVC pocket.

I personally like to use weekly horizontal pages instead of the vertical layout. I was able to make my own horizontal weekly pages but kept these in the back to plan out my week. The vertical layout is numbered hourly. It begins at 8am and ends at 8pm. I actually did not use this system of hourly planning but rather used it as a to do list.

I really liked how the Filofax came with colored lined paper. It really came in handy when jotting down extra notes. The paper in the Filofax is quite thin. If you're using a regular ball point pen, the ink shouldn't bleed through. Anything with a heavier ink flow, such as a fountain pen, would probably bleed through. However, I have not tested a fountain pen on this paper so I can't say for sure. What I did try were gel pens, such as the Pilot G-2 and the Uni-ball Signo micro pens. These kinds of pens do not bleed but they do ghost. However it's nothing too harsh.

I'm glad the Filofax included a PVC pocket because those are always useful to have. You can use it to hold your receipts, stickers or sticker labels, notes, etc. Another thing I was glad to see was the notepad in the very back pocket. I like how you can easily tear out the page and since it is already hole punched, you can put it in any section of your Filofax.

The Filofax Ochre Malden A5 is definitely one of the pricey planners/organizers out there but I have to say it is well worth it. Looking at pictures of it is one thing but actually being able to hold it is another. It really is a beauty in person. It feels really nice in the hands and also flexible, which is what I wanted. Since the Filofax is a little more flexible than sturdy, it is easier to use and write on a desk or hard surface. For the most part, this is not a problem and it really just depends on personal preference. I must say that this Filofax is fragile and it is definitely an item that should be handled with care. I know that most people in the planner community own the personal size planners but I prefer the A5 because it allows more space to write in. Because it is bigger, it will take up more space in, say a purse or backpack, than the personal size might. From the time I purchased this Filofax until now, February 2017, I have noticed that the leather has darkened and looks even better than when it first arrived. It is also still in very good condition but this might be due to the fact that I do not travel with it, again because it is quite fragile. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and happy to own a Filofax Ochre Malden in the A5 size. In the near future, I will be posting an update on this Filofax and will show what the scratch near the button closure looks like now. I will also show a peek into my Filofax set up, including my homemade dividers and inserts.
